There’s a real chance a friend may have said it to her as a way to make her feel better about how blobby she’s become and she latches on to that to cope. Realistically, she hates how big she is but she does it to appease her husband and for the money. She has now also been out of the normal job market for so long that it would be hard for her to find any other type of work anymore even if she wants to quit this.
