Another guy jumping on the carb thing for WG — rice specifically. I'm the cook in the relationship and I've been making a lot more Asian stuff over the past couple years. Speaking of dietary restrictions, this is because I realized late in the game I'm lactose intolerant and Chinese-Thai-Southern Indian-etc cuisine uses little or no dairy.
Anyway this switch means that rice has become our primary starch and my wife is BLOWING UP on it. We don't own a scale but it's a visible change, all in her belly though that's a feature, not a bug for me, and age-appropriate because we're old. She complains but doesn't seem super-motivated to do anything about it except get back to the gym. (Spoiler alert, she hasn't yet.)
When she bitches that we're eating too much rice I tell her I'll serve her a smaller portion of it and she says "Well don't do that..." In fact she used to complain I didn't make enough and now has me cooking 2 cups of rice just for the two of us, and she usually winds up eating 3/4 of it. If there's some leftover I'll leave it on the stove and catch her feeding on it later that night. The stuff is like crack for her.
Mind you, I've been cooking pasta and potatoes for almost 20 years without the same effects. I now consider rice the magic WG fuel.
