While I haven't dated Americans before so can't answer in detail for that, but remember that dating people as a foreigners usually puts you at a disadvantage. Sure there are definitely many that are going to find a German/European exotic, but you are still on away ground and are likely going to miss on a bunch of cultural context that will make the process of dating harder. I have dated a few girls from the UK and even there I'd say dating becomes much more difficult being from somewhere else in Europe. I imagine the difference between Germany vs USA is even bigger. If emigrating to the US isn't much of an option, keep in mind that you can look towards other places. Personally, I just came back from a three weeks holiday in Turkey and oh boy did they have fatties. And on top of that I find their women particularly beautiful weight aside.
