Just realized a good question to ask, if more most super big sumo wrestlers, they start out as pretty big kids or somewhat big and work their way to be super duper fat?

As well as being hard work and why in the nation of origin, a fair amount of wrestlers aren't depicted as sexy/attractive, to be more comic relief or fan disservice. That we have to blind ourselves rather than see a sumo character walking around in a mawashi. I throw stuff out hoping to start a discussion and inspire people to post more on this thread. to post videos, images and discuss stuff on sumo. Either wrestlers, history and fictional depictions. Perhaps too it's also seen as an "old person sport" to a younger generation. So that can be why most mangaka don't focus it in their stories or depicting the wrestlers as sexy/attractive. As well as why a story of sexy female sumo wrestlers aren't more a thing, if doing that would be sexualizing something that's of little interest to most of a possible audience, and if it's at odds with Japanese ideals of feminine beauty. Having a woman become a big fat sumo wrestler wouldn't be seen as sexy to most of a possible audience. Plus it's not like sexualizing female wrestling where women in the thing is normal and done. Putting women in a though manly man sport and having them be scantily clad would feel weird. Like doing a story of female American football/rugby players in bikinis/lingerie getting into sexy scenarios. It'd be less sexy to most people and more weird. If that's what keeps sumo from being used frequently in most Japanese fiction like samurai, ninja and yokai. Or getting sexualized like those things.

Figured this is also why works with sumo protagonists are few and far. As most Japanese men don't fantasize about becoming big fat sumo wrestlers. The lifestyle is hard and demanding, plus one doesn't get babes until they're famous enough. Stuff for gay/bisexual men exists where big fat sumo get it on with other big fat sumos yes, but stuff aimed at straight dudes, few and far between. Most tales want average everymen protagonists over someone specialized like a sumo wrestler. Even if the tale somehow took place in a setting that justifies a big fat sumo with big fat babes, it wouldn't sell. Though there may be hope, more series have larger women, so perhaps more mangaka could start presenting sumos as sexy/desirable and perhaps come up with stories of big fat sumos with big fat babes in more mainstream works. Or have mainstream works with big fat sumos with other big fat sumos.
